Tombstone Photobases

A comparatively recent development in online genealogy is the introduction of photobases, searchable databases of photographs. The number of these dedicated to tombstones has been growing, as has their content. Here are some of the best sites to search to see if someone has uploaded a photo of one of your ancestor's tombstones. While you're visiting, consider contributing some of your own collection.

  • Find A Grave has been locating the graves of famous people since 1995, but recently began including graves of the non-famous. So far, they have about 2.5 million listings! http://www.findagrave.com/
  • The Virtual Cemetery, an electronic memorial to our ancestors where you can search for or contribute photos of tombstones: http://www.genealogy.com/vcem_welcome.html
  • Paula Easton's Cemetery Photos is another excellent site where you can search or share tombstone photos: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pines/2318/
